Rhy Te Waka

Kia Ora e te iwi.

In early 2023, I embarked on a journey to become a midwife; Today, I am entering the final semester of my degree. I was drawn to this field to manaaki and whakamana whānau, during one of the most transformative times of their lives – hapūtanga, birth and beyond.

During the past three and a half years, I have developed a keen interest in Māori health, particularly within the birthing space. Unfortunately, Māori are subject to significant barriers within healthcare, therefore resulting in poorer outcomes. Step by step, I hope to slowly bridge the gap of inequity for whānau Māori, by way of midwifery mahi within the community.

The support received from Hope Fish, affirms the importance of my vision as a budding midwife. Personally, this grant propels me closer to the finishing line, removing any stress or financial worry for me during my final semester. However, the impact extends beyond me and positively impacts the whānau I intend on caring for within the near future – for that, I will forever be grateful.

I envision myself walking alongside whānau Māori, supporting and empowering them to reclaim birth into their own hands. In future, I hope to revitalise and preserve Māori birthing customs, and that the fruits of my labour can make a change amongst our community, no matter how small or great.
